HIV vaccine: myth or reality?

HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is the cause of the deadly disease AIDS. About 40 million cases of AIDS have been reported worldwide as this epidemic is spreading with alarming proportions.
Amidst such a situation, the development of the vaccine for HIV called as HIV-1 DNA by a research team at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) headed by Dr Pradeep Seth comes as a sign of hope and relief. Though the vaccine is yet to be tested extensively on humans (interestingly, Dr Seth has injected himself with the vaccine to test its toxicity on humans and he suffered no side-effects), the tests on animals have shown positive results.
As of now the clearance is awaited so as to perform clinical trials on humans. It will be a matter of pride for India that we come up with something that the whole world can bank upon. But there is many a slip between the cup and the lip. I hope that the research gets clearance and appropriate funds from the government so that the work could progress smoothly. It is not long before a vaccine for AIDS becomes a reality and saves people from the deadly disease, which is also treated as a social stigma.
