It really surprises me the way technology is running. There were times when we had 20MB space in a HDD, and now we can have upto 18GB of space on a single DVD.
For people who dont know the different DVD formats avialable, i'll just list them for you.
a) DVD -5, this is the normal DVD disc that most people use. It is single sided with a single layer and can hold upto 4.7GB of data
b) DVD -9, this is the DVD disc that most English movies are ripped onto for you to rent from video libraries. So, if you wish to make a backup of a rented movie, you first have to shrink it to a normal DVD-5 size, and then make a copy of it. This type of disc can store upto 8.5GB of data, and is single sided, but dual layered.
c) DVD -10, This is the most odd type of DVD according to me. It is dual sided, but single layered and can hold upto 9.4GB of data. Its like having Side A and side B in an audio casette, where you have to flip the casette over. In this case, you have to flip the DVD over to read the second half. They could have simply eliminated this type acc to me, it just holds 1 GB more data than DVD -9, but DVD-9 is so simple to use, atleast the user doesnt have to flip the side.
d)DVD -18, This is a double sided, double layered disc which can hold upto 17.08GB of data. This is not very common in the market and is the toughest to manufacture.
After giving you this background information, my question to you is that Do we need a DVD-10, where making a backup for your ownself gets so difficult. If i borrowed a DVD from the library and want to make a bckup for my own personal use at a later stage, i have to make two DVD's, one for each side of the DVD-10. |

| Thanks for the info garcons...i think i agree with you that we don't need DVD 10 as copying and using it both is a hassle, i don't understand why they came up with such a product in the market in the firts place? |

Thanks for the info garcons..
With regards to your question, i feel that you are correct...there seems to be no benefit of DVD10 on the face of it. |

On second thoughts, if they have a DVD-10, I'm sure there has to be a reason behind it. Maybe they want to make things difficult for people who backup movies/TV series for personal use
But sure enough, there are programs that can convert a two sided disc into one sided single layered disc. |
