Sometimes I find it ironic what all we approve when it’s labeled as art. Nudity is one of those things. You’d not be too proud if your wife discover a copy of playboy while cleaning the room. Chances are that you’d have a fair bit of explaining to do before you are allowed back in the bedroom from couch.
On the other hand, you’d probably display on your bookshelf a copy of photography magazine or a book featuring pictures of naked woman.
Playboy features pictures of naked woman & you are supposed to feel ashamed if you are caught with it, a lot of art and photography books and magazines display pictures of naked women and you feel proud of it because it compliments your good taste in the art of photography.
Let’s take a look at the underlying motive of whatever is happening here. In a simple world, both the situations involve two people. Playboy needs a naked model & a photograph, the glossy art magazine needs a naked women & a photographer.
The woman in playboy is modeling in the hope to be spotted by filmmaker, a modeling agency or an Add producer. So that she can get famous and earn a lot of money. The women in the glossy art magazine is posing for the same reason
The photographer in playboy is shooting naked women to earn money. The photographer who is the “artist” is shooting naked women in the hope to have an exhibition, to get noticed, get approval and admiration so that he can get more business & earn more money.
The end result is the same- a naked women.
The motives are same, the subject is the same, a naked woman, then why we do appreciate one and not the other. |
