The 28th Olympics will begin in a short while from now. Can't wait to see the grand opening ceremony...
The world's biggest sporting extravaganza returns to the city of its origin, Athens.
Here's wishing everyone all the best and hope that there are less doping scandals and more enjoyment in the game for the spectators and the participants alike. |

India can win 10 Olympic medals: PwC study
Monday, August 9 2004 18:41 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi: It might sound incredible but India could end up winning as many as 10 medals in the Athens Olympics if a new study by economists at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is to be believed.
The Indians managed only one Bronze medal in the previous edition at Sydney, but the analysis which takes into account factors like population, average income levels, whether the country is the host nation and whether it was previously a part of the Soviet Bloc, predicts an unprecedented haul for the country.
A similar study was done at the time of Sydney Olympics in 2000, which analysed how medal performance was related to economic and political factors.
"Macro-economics team of PwC (UK) has conducted the new study, which is an updated version of the one PwC published in 2000 that analysed how medal performance at the Sydney Olympics was related to economic and political factors," said a press release from the company.
"We have extended the research to include data on medal performance from the four Olympics since 1988 in order to produce some benchmarks against which performance at the Athens can be judged," it said.
The study says larger and wealthier countries do better but the effects do not seem to be fully proportional relative to their size, many small countries do very well.
The model also seeks to explain the dichotomy between nations like China and India the two countries with the largest population in the world but having diverse results in Olympics. China won 59 medals in Sydney as compared to the one by India.

The PWC prediction of 10 medals for India looks like some kinda joke. And PWC does not even give breakup of the sports in which India will get. After the opinion poll fiasco , can't say how much weight such studies really have.
I agree that the Indians contingent has but a few outside chances of medals ..but there is no point being cynical. Just as we support the Indian cricket team whether they have a 10 match losing streak or draw a series in Australia..lets put everything aside and support the contingent at Athens. Its the least we can do. If we dont support who else will!!! Go Team India ... ALl the Best!!! |

hi ppl,
gr8 to find the olmpic back..
now the medal ghost will once again visit the media rooms, n the usual conversation.
lets c wht hv v learnt since the last olmpics.
i will b very happy if PWC's study hold true,
v shud not expect a huge surprise.but even if v win 10 medals, as predicted, it will show tht v hv started the process.
it will surely take lot of effort to bring us to the world standards.
but defintely, if cricket n chess wud hv been part of the olympics, v wud hv been assured of at least two medals.
les hope for the best.
Go India Go. |

It was slightly disappointing on the olympic front to hear that our ace shooter, Anjali Bhagwat could not even make it to the finals...and i was hoping that she would get a gold for us...
Lets hope others do not disappoint us and we get at least 5 if not 10 medals. |
